Director's Note
We've talked before about biomedical transformation before here in LINKS, and this month I'm pleased to report continued, substantive progress on three national and international research initiatives. Additionally, several multi-center projects are highlighted this month, all using caBIG® technology in one form or another. The vision, and value, of an interconnected cancer research and care community continues to gain traction.
While our focus is often on the tangible, technical underpinnings of a connected research enterprise, I am particularly impressed by the spirit of collaboration among leading-edge researchers. While the historical scientific-discovery models and our current financial incentive system as researchers do not always support collaboration, I believe our desire to improve the human condition through science is trumping outmoded traditions.
As case studies found in this and past issues illustrate, we are finding new ways to translate basic research into improved clinical outcomes. We started our journey to accelerate cancer discoveries and improve clinical treatments a few short years ago. Technology, data and community are all required to catalyze a tectonic shift in how we work.
We have some distance to travel together. As you are proving, new discoveries are limited only by our collective imagination and our willingness to create a better future, together.
