Need for Consistent, Comparable Medical Imaging Data to Be Discussed at RSNA 2009

New medical imaging techniques represent an important opportunity for translational and collaborative research—but only if those data are consistent and comparable. Creating data standards and interoperable databases are two of the ways in which the attendees at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) will seek to address the challenges of an open research environment.

More than 60,000 representatives from the radiology and medical imaging communities will be on-site later this month at the RSNA Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL. caBIG® community members will present the latest examples of caBIG® imaging capabilities in use, enabling researchers to access data for their research as well as tools to optimize and validate imaging technologies.

The possibilities for advancing research through enhanced imaging are exciting. For example, the use of imaging as a biomarker in clinical trials may potentially reduce the cost and time of determining drug efficacy. Such trials typically include multiple sites and varied imaging equipment and practices, yet to capitalize on this opportunity it is essential that researchers are able to view images and record image interpretation data in a standardized way.

Additionally, there is a generally un-mined opportunity to advance meaningful scientific discovery and personalized medicine by integrating imaging data with other data types—such as genomic or clinical outcomes data—that could be addressed by the use of standards and interoperable databases containing multiple types of data.

The caBIG® booth will be a visible presence at this event, and will be debuting a new case study featuring commercial and academic perspectives on opportunities in medical imaging, Visitors to the booth can also experience some of the imaging tools first hand through an interactive demonstrations.
