Health 2.0
"Health 2.0" is shorthand for numerous transformative changes in our health care environment, including:
- The application of the interactive features of Web 2.0 to the management of health for individuals and organizations
- Continually updated disease and treatment information, accessible on-demand on any platform that suits the user, with tools to "personalize" information based on individual profiles and interests
- Easy and dynamic formation of affinity communities—based on disease, treatment, or other common characteristics—to share information, concerns, etc.
- Data "liquidity" characterized by common terminologies and technical interoperability that enables seamless, rapid flow of information among individuals and institutions
- Use and re-use of data for consumer, research, clinical care, or administrative analysis and decision-making purposes
The requisite Information Technology capabilities for Health 2.0—including software services, cloud computing, and interoperability through defined semantics—are common in the business and consumer worlds. But these have been slow to develop in biomedicine where information is typically "trapped" in paper files or electronic silos.
The caBIG® program is demonstrating data liquidity in cancer by developing a comprehensive collection of software services—deployed locally or implemented in a cloud computing environment—for a wide range of functions needed to collect, analyze, and manage research and clinical data for the Health 2.0 world. caBIG® web-based capabilities will accelerate research, improve clinical care, empower consumers, and facilitate Meaningful Use of Electronic Health Records by healthcare providers.
"Dr. Ken Buetow has been spearheading the work around caBIG®, which essentially is a set of tools, policies, and programs to spur this data revolution to ensure clinicians, researchers, patients, and others can communicate with one another in ways to unlock the value of this data."
