caBIG™ Feature – October 2006

Clinical Trial Matchmaking Made Easy

"With the great concept that BCT had, we at NCICB understood that this idea of empowering patients with the ability to match themselves to existing clinical trials had tremendous potential," said Dr. Kenneth Buetow, Director, NCICB. "caMatch is a great example of how community driven caBIG™ really is. caBIG™ is not about forcing people to use tools that don’t work for them. It’s about implementing easy to use technologies and best practices that can be widely used, so we’re more connected as a community and more knowledgeable as cancer researchers."

In addition to the greater potential treatment options and hope the matching service provides patients, caMatch has a number of additional benefits. For organizers of the trials, it helps them to more easily identify a sufficient number of qualified trial subjects. Many experts point out that one of the most common causes for clinical trial delays is a lack of appropriate patients.
