Analyzing Brain Cancer In a "Big" Way

A Second NCI Initiative Advances the GMDI

While the GMDI uses state-of-the-art genetics to provide the raw data for biomedical advancement, another project relies upon caBIG™ information technology (IT) to supplement and enhance the GMDI. Dubbed REMBRANDT, for REpository for Molecular BRAin Neoplasia DaTa, the program is simultaneously a repository for brain tissue data; a set of software tools to aggregate and analyze that data; and a grid that creates virtual connections among researchers across the country by linking disparate information technology platforms.

REMBRANDT was developed by the Neuro-Oncology Branch and founders of caBIG™, an information network initiated by the NCI to enable all the constituencies in the cancer community to share data and knowledge to accelerate the discovery of new diagnostics and therapeutics and to improve patient outcomes. In fact, REMBRANDT is serving as a prototype for the larger caBIG™ which applies to many types of cancer. REMBRANDT works solely with brain tumor data.
