From its inception, caBIG® was envisioned as a partnership with the cancer community. Currently, more than 50 NCI-designated Cancer Centers across the nation are working to connect their research and clinical care capabilities into a caBIG®-enabled information network. Through the NCI's Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP), 16 Community Cancer Centers that together touch 20 million lives are also becoming part of this network.
More than 1,500 individuals from over 450 organizations have participated in caBIG® activities since the initiative's inception. Among the participants are:
NCI-Designated Cancer Centers
caBIG® was conceived, designed, and developed in partnership with the NCI-designated cancer centers. Teams from the cancer centers and their communities are involved in the development and testing of tools and other resources that are part of the ongoing design of caBIG®.
Individuals
Scientists, informaticists, patient advocates, and others in the cancer community participate in caBIG® through their involvement in workspaces, ongoing caBIG® meetings, and other activities.
Government
caBIG® has become the underlying information infrastructure for all of NCI's advanced technology initiatives, including the Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer, the Clinical Proteomic Technologies Initiative, The Cancer Genome Atlas, and NCI's clinical trials activities. In addition, caBIG® tools and infrastructure have been shared with the National Cancer Institute's Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs) and Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program.
Industry and Other Partners
Commercial organizations, such as IT companies, large-scale software vendors, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, and nonprofit organizations participate in caBIG® in a variety of ways, from participation in open meetings to deep involvement with specific caBIG® workspace activities.
