Nationwide Health Information Network

The Nationwide Health Information Network is an initiative of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology that seeks to provide a foundation for the exchange of health information technology across diverse entities, within communities, and across the country. Today, the Nationwide Health Information Network is operating as the Nationwide Health Information Network Exchange. This Exchange is comprised of a diverse set of federal agencies and non-federal organizations that have come together to securely exchange electronic health information.

In December 2008, caBIG® participated in a Nationwide Health Information Network project to demonstrate interoperability between geographically separate project participants by sharing clinically relevant patient information using the caBIG® infrastructure. The demonstration project was successful and caBIG® continues to be an active participant in planning, discussions, and projects.
