National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) have initiated a collaboration to create a specification for an oncology Electronic Health Record (EHR) that will utilize caBIG^® standards for interoperability. An implementation of this specification will then be deployed to the participating organizations of the National Community Cancer Center Program (NCCCP), an NCI program whose focus is to bring enhanced cancer treatment to underserved populations by increasing participation in clinical trials and deploying information technology to enhance care and research.

This partnership will provide a laboratory for the development and use of EHRs in clinical practice, while bringing the benefits of clinical research as part of care, and modern health information technology to populations that are traditionally underserved.
