The Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) is run by the Office of the National Coordinator and seeks to establish a federation of organizations, including government agencies, clinical centers and hospitals, and health information systems vendors, that shares patient health information. The objectives of the initiative are to create a secure, nationwide, interoperable health information infrastructure that will connect providers, consumers, and others involved in healthcare and to enable health information to be accessible by patients and their clinicians to inform clinical decision making.
In December 2008, caBIG® participated in an NHIN project to demonstrate interoperability between geographically separate NHIN participants by sharing clinically relevant patient information using the caBIG® infrastructure.
The demonstration project was successful and caBIG® continues to be an active participant in NHIN planning, discussions, and projects.
